My published ocean articles

As a freelance ocean journalist, I write about all sorts of fun and fascinating things going on under the waves. (I've also written some ocean books). From how Free Willy star Keiko shaped orca captivity for the guardian and how soaring ocean temperatures are affecting corals for Nat Geo to "defensive defection" in whales for BBC Wildlife and humpback whale sex for Sci Am. And these are just a few examples. You can read some of my published articles on marine science, conservation and sustainability below (or check out the links at the end of this page for more of my stories).

Want more? Cool. My work as a freelance ocean journalist is best split into these different topics. Click on the pages below to read more of my stories on each theme. I hope you enjoy them!

As a freelance writer, I take on assignments (as well as pitching story ideas). If you're an editor or organisation looking to commission a marine science or conservation story and think I could help you, please get in touch with details of your brief, budget and deadline and we can chat further.

FAQs

Do you only write about the ocean?

No. I do write about other subjects too (usually sustainability, eco travel and terrestrial conservation) but the ocean is my passion so this tends to be where my focus lies.

Do you offer copywriting services for companies and organisations too?

Yes, I offer a range of copywriting services.

If you include me in a piece, can I see a draft before it's published?

No. While I might be in touch to fact check a couple of things, particularly for complex pieces, the subject or interviewee of my article won't be able to review or approve copy of an editorial article before publication (unless otherwise agreed beforehand). Of course, if you're a client who has booked me to write articles for your own channels then, yes, we would go through an approvals process as part of the project.
