Copywriting

With my help, you can create engaging blogs, articles and copy your audience will love

Knowing how to talk about your organisation or project in a way everyone can understand can feel like an overwhelming task for many organisations – particularly if you work in a conservation or science-based field. But if you’re not sure where to start when it comes to telling your organisation’s story, don’t panic. That’s where I come in.

As a writer published by the likes of Nat Geo, the Guardian and more, I have experience writing a wide range of copy and can help you write engaging content your audience will love. One of my favourite things is taking a complicated subject and, put simply, absolutely geeking out. I’ll chat to you and your team to get to the bottom of what you’d like to say and how we can phrase it in an engaging and inspiring way. Then, I’ll distil our conversations - along with my own research - into the end result. Whether it's a lighthearted blog, an in-depth article on marine science, an annual report or a ghostwritten opinion piece, I love helping organisations engage and inspire their audience.

Testimonials

"I managed Melissa as part of a team of freelancers working on a company-wide project editing copy for a new Customer Relationship Management system. Right from day one, she was a pleasure to work with.

The copy she produced was to a very high standard and she was extremely efficient, completing tasks well before the set deadlines which made her a real asset to the team. Her attitude was always great and she was friendly, professional and enthusiastic throughout the entire project. Thanks Mel!"

"I had the pleasure of working with Melissa very recently on communications planning for the Stronger Shores project. Melissa’s brief was to take our complicated project messaging and distill down to make it pop! Melissa’s passion for marine conservation was a real draw; I knew we were in the best hands possible, as her love for nature and the ocean really shone through.

I was particularly impressed with the way Melissa cleverly facilitated the workshops. What felt like a conversation to us, Melissa was expertly gleaming the information she needed to hone together an effective and punchy messaging document. I would highly recommend Melissa for any of your PR/comms and copywriting work, especially if you are looking to tailor your comms strategy to encourage behaviour change and help the environment! I really hope to work with Melissa again in the future."

FAQs

Where can I see examples of your writing?

For examples of my writing, please check out my published work.

Why do you show 'starting at' prices rather than exact costs?

Each of my clients is different and has unique needs. As such, all my copywriting quotes are bespoke and take into account factors such as the length and complexity of the project, deadlines and levels of research involved. If you'd like to discuss a quote for your project, please get in touch.

Your copywriting services are out of my price range. Do you offer other services at a lower price point?

My services are priced based on my level of expertise and value I can add. If my pricing is out of your budget, it might be possible to reduce the scope or recommend another freelancer.

What if we have a really big project that's too much for one person?

The great thing about working in the for-purpose sector is that there are several brilliant other freelancers working in the same space and I have a great network. We see each other as friends and collaborators rather than competition. This means if I don't have capacity, I can recommend someone else or work with another suitable freelancer (or several) to get the project done.

What's your day rate?

I don't charge using a day rate or by word count. Instead, I offer package pricing and all my quotes are bespoke depending on the type, length, timings and complexity of your project. We'll agree the price before I start work and, if my quoted fee is out of your range, we can reduce the scope of work before getting started. Having a clear fee for the agreed deliverables means you know exactly where you stand and there are no nasty budget surprises if something takes longer than we anticipated.

Can I hire you to write about my organisation in a magazine or publication?

No - while I do both copywriting (for organisations) and editorial writing (that is, writing for papers, magazines and websites), they are two very separate types of work. You're welcome to hire me to write articles for your own channels because I'm creating the content for you. But when I write for a publication, I pitch stories because I feel they will educate, engage and inspire their readers - not because I'm being paid by an organisation (as this would constitute a conflict of interests).

If you have a story you think I might be interested in editorially, feel free to get in touch and we can chat about whether it's something I think will be a good fit to pitch my editors - but this is not a 'service' I offer so I can't be hired for this type of work.

Are you insured?

Yes. I have professional indemnity and public liability insurance with Beazley (cours

Do you charge VAT?

No. I do not currently charge VAT on my services.
