As a specialist marine writer, I've built on my work for National Geographic, BBC Wildlife, BBC Countryfile, New Scientist, Scientific American and more by adding some ocean books to my portfolio. As a published author, I've written the following non-fiction science books.
Wellfleet Press (The Quarto Group) published my debut book, The Wonder of Seashells, in April 2025.
About the Wonder of Seashells: This book is a treasury of stories, science, and history about seashells. Sure to delight and surprise, this visual odyssey of the beauty of seashells reveals how shells enhance and inform the world around us. Exploring coasts and shells from across the globe, each unique shell will suddenly become familiar with The Wonder of Seashell’s beautiful illustrations and fascinating insights.
DK Nature Books published The Ocean Book (the Stories, Science, and History of Oceans) in May 2025. I was one of the six contributors.
About the ocean book: Earth owes its identity as the blue planet to the vast oceans of water that cover almost 70 per cent of its surface. Home to an abundance of marine life and vital in regulating Earth’s climate, the oceans are also the backdrop to daring exploits of seafaring and to colourful mythological tales. Combining arresting photography, rich illustrations, and engaging, expertly written text, The Ocean Book showcases the animals and plants, physical geography, and captivating human stories of the world’s oceans.Whether you’re interested in blue whales, penguins, coral reefs, whirlpools, or the golden age of pirates, this is the perfect exploration of the ocean realm.
I'm currently working on a book project all about sharks. I'm still looking for the right publisher to help me get this book to market so watch this space! (If you're a publisher and would like to review my book proposal, I'd love to hear from you).
If you're a publisher in need of a marine science writer for one of your ocean books, get in touch. I no longer take on 'writer for hire' work but am happy to discuss projects on an advance and royalties basis. You can get in touch by emailing me on hello at melissahobson dot co dot uk.
