I am now an ocean author!

February 9, 2025

An exciting post today as I can share another string that I've added to my bow: the ocean writer is now also an ocean author! My debut book - The Wonder of Seashells - is coming out this year (April 2025). Following hot on its heels is another book I also contributed to: The Ocean Book: The Stories, Science, and History of Oceans (May 2025).

My new seashell book!

The Wonder of Seashells: Discover the Meaning and Magic of the Ocean’s Treasures

This book is a treasury of stories, science, and history about seashells. Sure to delight and surprise, this visual odyssey of the beauty of seashells reveals how shells enhance and inform the world around us. Exploring coasts and shells from across the globe, each unique shell will suddenly become familiar with The Wonder of Seashell. Check out The Wonder of Seashells.

Becoming an ocean author

I've always written short form (articles) so writing my first book was a really interesting process. Having come across my marine articles, the publisher asked if I'd be interested in writing it for them. It was a bit intimidating to write a whole book but I thought why not? I never thought I'd be published by titles like Nat Geo and BBC Wildlife. So, if I can do that, maybe I can be an ocean author too!

It was a relatively short turnaround and required lots of research but it's been a really cool experience. And now my name is on the COVER of an ocean BOOK as the AUTHOR! (can you tell I never thought this would happen haha?)

Contributing to the Ocean Book

I was also invited to contribute to The Ocean Book: The Stories, Science, and History of Oceans. Here's how the publisher (DK) describes it:

Earth owes its identity as the blue planet to the vast oceans of water that cover almost 70 per cent of its surface. Home to an abundance of marine life and vital in regulating Earth’s climate, the oceans are also the backdrop to daring exploits of seafaring and to colourful mythological tales. Combining arresting photography, rich illustrations, and engaging, expertly written text, The Ocean Book showcases the animals and plants, physical geography, and captivating human stories of the world’s oceans.

Whether you’re interested in blue whales, penguins, coral reefs, whirlpools, or the golden age of pirates, this is the perfect exploration of the ocean realm.

What's next for the ocean writer (and now ocean author)?

It's very cool to see my non-fiction science book out in the world... And I'm already working on my next one! It's still in the early stages but I'm hoping to find a publisher for my next fun ocean science book soon. (Yes, science can be fun and silly, especially when you're talking about the sea). Until I get a publisher locked in, I'm keeping most of the details to myself. But I can tell you I'm planning a stunning illustrated coffee table book all about sharks. But with a twist!

Hopefully my prep will continue to go well. Fingers crossed you'll see the name of this ocean author on the cover of my next book soon!

If you're a publisher looking to work with a published author on a non-fiction book about marine science, conservation and the wonders of the ocean, get in touch.
