Overview

The British Deaf Association (BDA) is the UK's leading membership organisation and registered charity run by Deaf people for Deaf people. The BDA delivers a range of services to achieve its aims of empowering Deaf people to overcome difficulties that they face on a daily basis.

The challenge

Deaf-led organisation British Deaf Association (BDA) needed help to raise its profile in mainstream UK & Irish media. Introducing the BDA to 'hearing' media was a challenge. Not only was this a new experience for them but many production teams had never worked with - or even met - a Deaf person before!

The strategy

  • Set up and ran a reactive press office to deal with incoming media enquiries
  • Helped journalists with the logistics of working with the Deaf community
  • Built relationships with key news and features journalists
  • Provided PR consultancy and media training

The results

  • 90+ pieces of press coverage secured in one year
  • 21 of those pieces were broadcast - showing how much progress the BDA made since that first production team was nervous of interviewing a Deaf spokesperson!

As Associate Director at Rooster, Melissa led BDA’s PR team. She worked for the agency from 2014 to 2018.
